Dr. Jeanne Smith
Dr. Jeanne Smith operated an all avian veterinary practice from 1988 to 2024. Dr Smith started her training by obtaining a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Avian Sciences at UC Davis. She then went on to receive her veterinary degree from UC Davis. After veterinary school she completed an avian medicine internship at North Carolina State University School of Veterinary Medicine and a one year avian medicine residency at UC Davis.
Before starting her private practice in 1988, she was the director of a laboratory manufacturing poultry vaccines. As she started her practice, she became the consulting veterinarian for Roudybush, Inc, a company manufacturing pet bird foods. She held that position for 19 years.
In her spare time in the 2000’s she developed species specific probiotics for birds. As a result of this research, true probiotics, which colonize and reproduce in the GI tract, are available for cockatiels, budgies, and the pyrrhura species conures (green cheeked conures and their close relatives).
She has written various articles for a variety of bird magazines and a nutritional diseases chapter in a veterinary textbook. She has given lectures to animal sciences classes at UC Davis, pet bird and ratite clubs, pigeon combines, and at the California State Race for racing pigeons. She’s presented several papers at the Association of Avian Veterinarians conference, primarily on infectious diseases of pet birds.
Dr. Smith maintained a 5 star rating on Yelp throughout her tenure as owner of Avian Health Serrvices. In her retirement, she is offering her expertise to bird owners via consultations.
